Songwriter. Young began in the music business as a singer for music publishers, promoting their songs. During World War I, he toured Europe entertaining the troops. He published his first two hit songs in 1914, "Don't Blame It All on Broadway" and "When the Angelus is Ringing". His novelty song "Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go With Friday on Saturday Night?" was a favorite of Al Jolson. From 1916 to 1930, he was partners with Sam Lewis and they wrote such songs as "Mammy", "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue", "Dinah", "I'm Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter", "How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm?" and "I'm Sitting on Top of the World". He was a charter member of American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) and was its director from 1926 to 1939). He is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
