Russian emperor. Also known as Vasili IV Shuysky (Shuisky). Reigned 1606-1610. He was the last tsar of the Ruric Dynasty and one of the boyars under Feodor I and Boris Godunov, acting as a cohort of his brother Dmitry. He has been considered responsible for several assassinations within the imperial family. After becoming tsar in 1606 he enjoyed little or no recognition from his subjects and clung to the throne through the aid of his military boss Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky. Deposed in 1610 by two former supporters, he ended up in Warsaw as a pawn in an exchange of prisoners of war. He died while imprisoned in Gostynin, Poland and his body was returned to Moscow for burial in 1635. Basil was married twice and had two daughters in his second marriage, both of whom died in childhood.
