Civil War Veteran. CO. K 6 REG. PA. INF. on stone. Buried in a section of the cemetery where only civil war soldiers are buried. According to information provided by Laura Breite, John enlisted on 22 April 1861 at Harrisburg, PA and mustered out there on 26 July 1861. On 15 March 1897 at White Haven,PA., he applied for a pension and finally received a $21 monthly allowance starting on 17 July 1914. Two years later, on 24 October 1916 John died at Bethlehem, PA while under the care of his niece, Julia Sheetz(nee Bartholomew).
John was the son of John Meckes and Elizabeth Greenzweig. The 3rd of at least 10 children they had (Tobias,Joseph,John,Peter,Samuel,Nathan,Henry,July Ann,Elizabeth and Christiana). He was christened at Salem Union Church 12 April 1829 in Gilbert, Monroe County,PA. The sponsors were George and Catherine (Meckes) Getz.
It was recorded that he was 5 feet 11 inches tall with light complexion, light eyes,and dark hair and his occupation was a laborer. He never married. (Obit. in "The Globe",South Bethlehem, Tuesday, 24 October 1916,p. 2; PA death certificate # 102442)
