Albert Ernest Meek, age 68, passed away peacefully Monday, November 21, 2016 at Good Samaritan Society in Indianola, Iowa.
Albert was born October 17, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa to Bernard and Florence (Buhrer) Meek.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Walke from 1968 to 1970 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He married Sherry Way on March 1, 1969 and together they shared 48 wonderful years.
Al was a man of varied interests including hunting, coin collecting, and wine making and he performed as a drummer for various bands over the years. He had a talent for good barbecue and participated in barbecue competitions, both as a competitor and also as a judge. He developed “Uncle Albert’s Spices” with many spice blends specifically for grilling, his favorite being his “Butt Rub.” Many people will remember him from Old West Barbecue at the Iowa State Fair, where he worked for over 20 years. But above all, his family meant the world to him and Al treasured time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Al is survived by his wife, Sherry; daughters, Missy Fleck and Miranda Meek; grandchildren, Brooke, Grace, Matteson, and Isabella; siblings, Linda Mack and Donna Gustafson; and many other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Florence Meek.
Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 27, 2016. Memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2016. Following the service, interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
