There has been some disagreement among researchers as to Sarah's maiden name. Sarah's maiden name was listed as "Walker" on her son Mansfield Bingham's death certificate by the informant. However, her youngest son (Samuel Marion Johnson) showed his mother's maiden name as "Sarah C. Coatney" on his Social Security Application in 1940. (Sam changed his surname from Johnston to Johnson.) Her own son's information is probably a more reliable source than an informant's info on a death certificate. It is also possible that "Walker" was a misunderstanding of "Walden" which was Sarah's last married surname prior to her death in 1903.

Sarah was married 4 times. First marriage to John Bingham abt 1856, 2nd marriage to John C. Johnston in 1870, 3rd marriage to George W. Hamlin on Sept. 16, 1884, 4th marriage to John D. Walden on Dec. 25, 1889. She only had children with her first 2 husbands.

Sarah was the 2nd wife of John D. Walden and is buried in the Walden Cemetery. Her name is incorrectly spelled Sarrah C. Wallen on her headstone. Sarah and her daughter Susan L. Johnston Walden died within 2 years of each other and are both buried in the same Walden family cemetery.

Sarah C. Coatney was the mother of:

1) Sarah Ann Bingham
2) William Robison Bingham
3) Mary J. Bingham
4) Mansfield Bingham
5) Louisiana (Louisia?) Bingham
6) Peter Bingham
7) Nancy Jane Bingham
8) Modica (Modnika?) T. Johnston
9) Susan L. Johnston
10)Samuel Marion Johnson (he changed the spelling from Johnston).

According to the 1900 census, 7 of those children were still living in 1900. Mary & Louisiana (Louisa?) Bingham are the 2 children not accounted for so far. They are believed to still have been living in 1900.

Sarah also helped raise several stepchildren after her 1870 marriage to John C. Johnston:

1) Josephine Johnston
2) Patrick Henry Johnston
3) Malinda Ann Johnston
4) John Riley Johnston
5) Mary Ellen Johnston
6) Doduria Johnston
7) Robert Lee Johnston
