Venango County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Apr. 10, 1999
Quail Valley
Riverside County
California, USA

Margaret Alice Keith was born on July 10, 1924, to Clifford D. Keith and Alice Honora Prosser Keith, in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Venango County. She attended Franklin High School, graduating with the class of 1941. On September 13, 1941, she married John James Meyers, in Franklin, Pennsylvania. Together, they had three children: Margaret Kathleen Meyers (Phipps), November 3, 1942; Lisbeth Jean Meyers (Harrell), February 22, 1950; Steven Keith Meyers, May 20, 1952. While her husband was in Europe during World War II, she worked at many odd-jobs to help support herself and her first child. She was a hard worker her entire life. When her husband John returned from the war, he attended Allegheny College. He and Margaret moved to Springboro, Pennsylvania, in 1948, where he coached basketball and taught school at Springboro High School. In approximately 1951, she and John moved to Los Angeles, California. Eager to work, she applied for different types of jobs, but was not hired. She applied for a waitress position at a restaurant, but was turned down because she had no experience. She told the owner of the restaurant she would work without pay for two weeks in order to prove her capabilities. The owner agreed, and Margaret worked for two weeks and began thereafter to receive a paycheck. In 1952, Margaret and John moved into a new home in Long Beach, California. Margaret began working at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, working there as a timekeeper. She and John and their two youngest children spent many week-ends during many years having fun in the sun at Quail Valley, California. Margaret quit Douglas Aircraft in 1963, and went to work for Lloyd Whaley Co., working as an office manager. In 1965, she and John divorced. She moved to Riverside, California, and married Charles Kay in November 1966, but the marriage only lasted two years. During this time, she began employment with the University of California, Riverside, working initially in Agricultural Engineering, and later with the Registrar's Office. She retired from UCR in 1989, moving into her new home in Quail Valley. Margaret had become very ill in 1975, and was told by her doctor that she had contracted chronic hepatitis B. She never knew how she had become sick with this disease, as she drank only very occasionally and did not use drugs, and did not live a lifestyle one might associate with being at risk for exposure to hepatitis. She lived with this illness until April 10, 1999, when it finally took her life. She was loved by her children and family. Margaret loved animals, was a die-hard Democrat, could dance a mean jitterbug, and took in stray people and animals, unable to resist those in need. She was kind, loving, hard-working, funny, a good dancer, opinionated, and generous. Some of the things she enjoyed were vacationing many summers in Lake Tahoe, gardening, camping, dancing and traveling. Her guilty pleasure was the dollar slot machines in Las Vegas. Margaret loved popular music, counting among her favorite singers Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, and many others. She loved the song "A Cottage For Sale." Before her passing, she bought a round-trip ticket to Franklin, Pennsylvania, but never made the trip. When Margaret died, some of the laughter died too. Rest in peace.

Survived by daughter Kathy Phipps (Jerry), daughter Lisbeth Harrell (John), son Steven Meyers, nephew Richard Meyers, granddaughter Kerry Jezisek (Joe), and grandson Michael Phipps (Susan),and her brother Gordon's seven children (John, Dan, Chris, Mary, Katy, Tony and Bob).
