Died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born near Bronson, MI on Feb. 11, 1924 the daughter of Lloyd and Erma (Fair) Beery, and attended the Hickory Corners Country School.

Vera was married to Richard Modert on Oct. 12, 1940 in Bronson. They resided in Three Rivers until Richard's death on Feb. 19, 1966.

Vera was married to Jerry Gilding on May 4, 1968 in Three Rivers. They resided in Burr Oak and Sturgis until Jerry's death in June of 1983.

Vera loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While living in Three Rivers, Vera worked at Miller's Ice Cream Shop; was secretary of the Pleasant Hill School Board; and is remembered for transporting many of the "country kids" to school. She participated in several card clubs, and played Canasta, Euchre, and Pinochle. She enjoyed music and dancing, travel, reading, and crossword puzzles. She and her husbands were members of the Moose, Elks, and Eagles lodges.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Connie Shutes of Kalamazoo; granddaughter, Melissa & Brendan Coyne of Pittsburgh, PA; 2 great-grandchildren, Griffin and Sophie Coyne; 2 step sons, Ted & Carol Gilding of Georgia, and Tom Gilding of Virginia; 2 step-grandchildren, Stacia & Patrick Torrey, and Mike Gilding; 3 step-grandchildren, Ashley, Lindsay, and Peyton Torrey;

1 brother, Harold & Marge Rice of Three Rivers; 4 sisters, Laura Cattell of Bronson, Bernetta Fox of Memphis, TN, Marie & Frank Tripp of Coldwater, and Donna & Richard Atkinson of Three Rivers; 2 sisters in law, Pearl & Roland Westphal of Schoolcraft, and Pauline Nash of Three Rivers; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by he parents; 2 husbands; and a brother, Leo Beery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006 at the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Three Rivers with Rev. Monsignor Michael Hazard and Rev. Mark J. Vyverman officiating. Burial will be in Adams Cemetery near Burr Oak. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
