Leslie L Marquez a resident of California City for 15 years passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2004 in Lancaster, California. He was born July 24, 1931 in Carpinteria, California. Leslie is survived by his wife, Iris Marquez of California City, CA. His children, Mary Ellen McComas, Alamogordo, NM, Daniel Marquez, Fontana, CA, Richard Marquez, California City, CA, Christine Ojeda, San Jose, CA, Paul Marquez, California City, CA, Rachel Barraza, Long Beach, Ca and Rebecca Roberson, Vineland, NJ. Step Children, Mark Burns, Murry, UT and Dianne Burns, Westminster, CA. Leslie is also survived by his mother, Josephine Loza Jacobo, Santa Barbara, CA and sisters Romelia Potter, Madera, CA and Yolanda Marquez, Goleta, CA. He was predeceased by his first wife, Delfina Marquez.
Leslie served for two years in the U.S. Army, including one year in Korea. He was the Postmaster of Carpinteria, CA from 1973-1978 and also served as Postmaster in La Habra, CA from 1978-1987. Since 1990 he had been a Real Estate Agent.
Leslie was a member of the Rotary Club, GI Forum, a founding member of Los Paisanos Latinos Golf Club and helped start Head Start Program in Carpinteria, CA in 1967 through the community Action Commission. In 1969 he was appointed to the Capinteria Planning Commission and in 1976 obtained the Carpinteria Medical Clinic. Leslie also served as President of the Santa Barbara Postal Union and was active in affirmative action programs in the U.S. Postal Service. He served in many other community programs and will be remembered for his many humanitarian acts.
Visitation was held Wednesday, September 8, 2004 from 10am-5pm at the McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara, CA. The Rosary also took place on Wednesday at 7pm at the St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria, CA. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 9, 2004 at the St Joseph Church, 5048 El Carro Ln, Carpinteria, CA.
A Memorial Service will be held in California City, CA at the Community Church of California City at 21001 Conklin Blvd, Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 10am.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Heart Association.
