Actor. Born John Sainpolis, he made his screen debut in 1914. He was well established as a character actor during the 1920s. He made a successful transition to sound films in "Coquette" starring as Mary Pickford's father. He appeared on Broadway in a number of plays including ‘A Man's World,' ‘The House of Bondage' with Blanche Yurka, ‘For the Defense' with Richard Bennett and, ‘The Return of Peter Grimm' with David Warfield. His daughter Catherine Sainpolis also acted on the stage. Having acted in 125 films, his last appearance was in Cecil B. DeMille's "Reap the Wild Wind."
