John B. Willis
Birth: Oct 1864
Death: 1909

Father: Alexander Willis
Mother: Catherine "Cassie" Gilley
Spouse: Mary Jane Sturgill

FROM GILLEY FAMILY HISTORY
John Willis was born October 1864 to Alexander Taylor and Cassie Gilley Willis and married Mary Jane Sturgill, daughter of Franklin and Carolina Stidham Sturgill.

His mother married George Lytle Collier and John is with them in 1870 but with his grandparents in 1880, John Barger and Mary Huff Gilley.

According to Addison Stallard, John cut a tree on a steep terrain near a cliff. He cut a section off the tree and it lodged against a rock. At a later date he asked George Melvin Gilley to help him dislodge it. While they were prying the log free, John was at the lower end of the log when it suddenly came free, catching him in the midsection and forcing him into another tree, causing his death. John was killed in 1909 and Mary raised the children by herself.

John and Mary Jane had 4 children:

Emma Belle Willis 1897–1992
Charles Emmett Willis 1899–1975
Tate Ervin "Earl" Willis 1901–1974
Claude Swanson Willis 1906–1944
