Obituary

John P. Hoffman, one of the first residents of this town, died this morning at 1 o'clock at his home on North Main Street from miners' asthma. He was 68 years of age. Mr. Hoffman was born in Germany and came to this country about 40 years ago, locating at Minersville. He subsequently moved to Ashland, and in 1862 came to Shenandoah. He was Chief Burgess of this town in 1865 and worked as a miner until about twenty years ago. For a number of years he kept a saloon in the house next door to the one in which he died. The deceased was married twice. His first wife died about 18 years ago, and in 1883 he married Mrs. Sophia Derr, mother of Poor Director Derr, who survives. The funeral will take place on Sunday.

Buried Yesterday

The funeral of the late John P. Hoffman, who died on Thursday, took place yesterday afternoon. Services were conducted in the Trinity Reformed Church by the pastor, Rev. Robert O'Boyle, and interment was made in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery. There was a large attendance, many people from out of town being present. Evan J. Davis was the director.
