Jazz-violinist and vocalist. Full name: Hezekiah Le Roy Gordon Smith. After playing in Alphonse Trent's band during the 1920s, he formed his own sextet in 1935 with musicians such as Cozy Cole, Buster Bailey, and Clyde Hart who were later to become world-famous. From 1956 he recorded with Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Stéphane Grapelli, and others. In 1965 he took up residence in Denmark performing frequently at Jazzhouse Montmartre in Copenhagen and touring actively in Europe. (bio by: Erik Skytte)
