incident of old age.His remains were laid
to rest in the Hough cemtery amid a large
concourse of weeping relatives and
sorrowing friends.The large attendance shows
the esteem in which he was held in the
community where he lived for sixty years.
The funeral was conducted by Rev.Barnett with
suitable songs and reading from Job 16:14
"All the days of my appointed time, will I
wait till my change comes."
Uncle Joe,as he was commonly called, had been
in poor health since the death of his faithful
companion of 50 years in January this
year.He seemed to lose his will to live.

Highland county,Ohio. He came to Missouri in
1839 with his young bride. She died the following
year in Cole County, leaving him with one child. He settled on Osage Fork in 1840 in what
is now Franklin Township. In 1845 he married
Lucretia Wright and they were blessed with
a large family, eight of whom survive him.
His sons are,Samuel B.,a member of the County
Court and William H.,a justice of the peace
of Franklin township.
He was a strong advocate of public schools, taking
the lead in reorganizing the school district
after the civil war.He saw the county grow
from a wilderness with few settlers to a
condition of happy christian homes with
every kind of improvement.Uncle Joe did
his part to bring about this change that
is so beneficial to us.L.C.Ditweiler
