Howard Ernest Kemp was born on July 18, 1921 in Sylvatus, Virginia. When he was old enough, he joined his father at the Lake Superior Coal Company near Welch, West Virginia.

He left the coal company August 8, 1942 and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served with the 385th Bomb Group, 1152 QM Co, earning WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, and Distinguished Unit Citation.

After the war he went back to the coal company. He soon met the love of his life, Juanita Virginia Ford. They were married on June 22, 1947 at her parent's home in Wolf Pen, West Virginia.

In 1953 they set out for California and the promise of a new life. He finally found a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad in Mojave.

Howard was preceded in death by both of his parents, both brothers and both sisters.

He is survived by Juanita, his wife of 58 years; he is also survived by his son Howard Kemp Jr. and his wife Linda of Bakersfield, two granddaughters, April Champion and husband Patrick of Bakersfield, Michelle Hassler and husband Jason of Bakersfield. Two great granddaughters, Marissa and Cara Champion of Bakersfield. A niece Faye Villacana and husband Pete, and their children, James, John, Paul and Vicky all of Tehachapi, plus numerous other relatives and in-laws throughout the country.

Howard will be missed by all who knew and loved him, but they thank God that his suffering is finally over and that his next conscious moment will be when Jesus Christ returns to reawaken him.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at the Stickel Mortuary Chapel.
