Stan Skidmore ("Skid" to his family and friends) was one of the finest athletes ever to come from Battle Creek, Michigan. At Battle Creek Central High School, he earned All-State honors in football, basketball, and baseball. He set the BCCHS school single-game rushing record in 1922, when he ran for 286 yards against Kalamazoo Central High School (the record lasted for eighty-one years). He was also Class President during his senior year in 1924.

He attended the University of Michigan, where his roommate was the legendary Wolverine, Bennie Oosterbaan. Coach Fielding Yost selected Stan as starting quarterback in his sophomore year, but he broke his ankle during a pre-season practice game and sat out the season. He played varsity baseball at Michigan and was offered a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Stan returned to Battle Creek after graduation and served as head coach of the BCCHS basketball team and assistant coach of the football team. Over the following thirty years, Stan would remain active in athletics, winning multiple city championships in golf, bowling, and doubles ping pong.

He worked with his father, Floyd, in the family construction and coal business for four decades. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Battle Creek, Saladin Temple, Shrine Club, Lions Club, Athelstan Club, Civil War Roundtable, and U of M Club of Battle Creek.
