Phillip Pipkin Bowen, minister of the gospel, was born to John and Anna Pipkin Bowen in Kershaw County, South Carolina in 1799.

Phillip married Frances "Fanny" M. DuBose in 1831, she was the daughter of Amos and Elizabeth Vaughan Dubose. In 1832 after her marriage to Phillip, Fanny opened the Sumterville Female Academy, and in 1835 opened the Bishopville Academy in Bishville, South Carolina. Prior to these schools she had been principal of the Fayette Female Academy.

Phillip and Fanny had a daughter Julia Pauline Bowen (1832-1911). After the death of Fanny, Phillip married her younger sister Mary Matilda DuBose. Phillip and Mary raised seven children:
