The funeral of Mrs. Alice Sears, widow of Marion Sears, will be held at the Lapel Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, and burial will follow in the Lapel cemetery. The Rex McCarty funeral home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Sears, who would have been 90 years old next month, died Sunday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Perley Shultz, northwest of Lapel.
Mrs. Sears was born October 11, 1852, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hersberger near Frederick City, Md. When she was only one year old the family moved by covered wagon from Maryland to near Lapel where she has resided since. She was early in life interested in education and during the early seventies taught at several different district schools in the township. Many persons who are now late in life went their first term of school to her. Among them was Ed Lukens. Mr. Lukens two years ago when the county corn husking contest was held at the home of Earl Myers, called Mrs. Sears to the loud speaker where she recounted some of the memories of her teaching days.
She was one of three persons from that locality who attended the United States Centennial at Philadelphia in 1876 and she was much impressed by the exhibits of progress made at that time 66 years ago. She was married about 1887 to Marion Sears who was also a member of a pioneer family of that vicinity. They spent many years at hard work and accumulated a large farm before the death of her husband. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arna Shultz, with whom she made her home and Omer Sears a well-known farmer and stockman of the Lapel community. She also leaves four grandsons, Marion, Gordon, and Laurel Sears and air Cadet Donald Shultz of the U.S. Navy who is stationed at Pensacola, Fla.
Mrs. Sears was the fourth child in a family of thirteen children. She is also survived by two brothers, Howard and Oliver P. Hersberger and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine McClintock and Mrs. Ella Sears of Lapel.
