Feline Mascot. Found in a Spencer, Iowa library bookdrop in -10 degree temperatures in January, 1988. His rescuers, two librarians who had unearthed him from under a pile of books, had no idea if someone abandoned him or a Good Samaritan took pity on him and put him in the bookdrop to get him out of the cold. When word of the kitten's plight became public, news crews from around the world came to the library to do stories on him. With a kitten who was now the towns celebrity, a contest was held to name him. His name was chosen in honor of the 'Dewey Decimal System', a system thats used in libraries to catalogue books. Once named, Dewey became an 'employee' of the library and even recieved a "city employee discount" from the local veterinarian for his medical needs over the years. He has his own 'bio' on the libraries webpage which also describes his job duties. Although the library staff helped care for him, one of his rescuers, Vicki Myron became his primary caretaker for the next 19 years. Shortly before his birthday, which was estimated due to his age at the time he was found, he was diagnosed with a stomach tumor. Soon after, his health began to decline and the decision was made by his caretaker to have him euthanised. Dewey passed away in his owners arms at age 19. The library staff is considering having him cremated and interred at the library.
