William Dove was born in Charles
County,Maryland and moved to
Fairfax County, Virginia with
his Parents when he was quite young.
He migrated to Pittsylvania County in
1783.
Sgt: volunteered August 1777;joined
Washington's Army;
2nd Tour-Marineon the"General Washington"
convoying Merchantmen out of Chesapeake
in route to Amsterdam;captured large
British Merchantman;served on crew to
bring the ship to Philadelphia;
Never received a cent of Prize Money.
4th. Tour--Corporal in Company at
Malvern Hill guarding Burwells Warehouse
in York.

taken August 22,1832, in Pittsylvania
County. William was aged 74 years.

*At the time of William's death he owned
three tracts of land, twenty one slaves
and a grist mill in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia.

When young William Dove moved with his
Parents from Maryland to Fairfax County,
Virginia,during August of 1777 when the
British landed at Elk River and marched
towards Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,William
enlisted as a marine on-board the General
Washington at Alexandria. This vessel was
destined to carry dispatches to France.
Two years later he enlisted again as a
seaman and sailed for Amsterdam in Holland.
When that mission was complete,he was
appointed Coporal under Captain Thomas
Pollard and marched to Malvern Hills below
Richmond,Virginia.After the War,William
returned to Pittsylvania County,Virginia,
where he lived until he died.
