Joe was the son of John F. and Mary E. (Hines) Ryan. Both of his parents were of Irish descent. Joe had four siblings; Daniel F., John had four siblings; Daniel F., James E., John B., and Catherine E. On April 25, 1907, Joe married Catherine Meehan, also of Haverhill. They had six children; Joseph U., Jr., Kate P., John, Rita T., James G., Robert W., and Mary. Joe worked in various shoe factories before he found his true calling. In 1907 he became a Haverhill Police officer. By 1920 he was a sergeant. Joe died in 1965 at the age of eighty-six. At the time of his death, he'd been married to Catherine for fifty-eight years.
