William Earl Hawkins was born in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, 10 April 1896, son of William Franklin and Mary Belle (Hagan) Hawkins; died while visiting his daughter's family in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina, 25 November 1965; and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery, Lincoln Township, Appanoose County, Iowa. He married in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa, 8 September 1923, Lora Geneva Patrick who was born in Unionville, Appanoose County, Iowa, 6 November 1896, daughter of Ira Melzine and Jennie Iantha (Hunt) Patrick; died in St. Joseph's Hospital, Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa, 28 February 1979; and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery. To this union were born four children: Phyllis Carolyn Hawkins, Betty Jane Hawkins, Mary Margaret Hawkins, and William Richard Hawkins.
He served [3227428] during World War I in Battery F, 337th Field Artillary, receiving his training at Camp Dodge Iowa, serving briefing in France just prior to the end of the war, and being honorably discharged at Camp Dodge on 5 February 1919.
