GUY, John Allen
Was born on April 2, 1916, to Otto and Andrea Guy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and passed away on November 26, 2006, at his home in Mojave, California. As a child, he enjoyed everything from fishing to ice skating. During his early years, John actually saw the arrival of street lighting in Cedar Rapids. High school found him playing the violin, as well as trying his hand in various sports. Through his own admission though, he always laughed about the time that he dropped the easy pass that saw his hasty dismissal from the football team! Prior to WWII, John served in the United States Navy aboard the USS West Virginia. The four years in the military passed very fast and upon discharge he went on to get a General Contractors License. This license would prove to be very valuable throughout his long life. As time went on, John worked as a union carpenter but soon found a steady job at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, as well as his future wife, Lucy. The two married on
July 17, 1953, in Yuma, Arizona. John, Lucy and their family resided for the next 50 years in Mojave, and over the years witnessed many changes to the small town. Upon retirement from the DWP, John taught Building Construction Technology at both Antelope Valley and Quartz Hill High Schools. He found this rewarding, but shortly thereafter, found that his true profession of building called him back. John built many large structures in the Antelope Valley from large medical centers to apartment complex units. But, many people will remember him coming to repair a small hole in a wall, as he always said eveyone's job was important. After retirement from the building profession, John would spend countless hours working in his garden. He was exceptionally proud of his one inch carrots! John was pre-deceased by his parents, wife Lucy, and daughter Lori. He is survived by his daughter Sandra of Independence, Calif., sons John and Dale, both of Mojave, grandchildren Susie, Emily, and Sarah, great granddaughter Sydnee, sisters Esther and Billie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be on Thursday, November 30, 2006, at Stickel Mortuary in Mojave at 11:00 am. Burial will be at the East Kern Cemetery in Mojave. Pastor John "Rocky" Vermillion will officiate. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
