Captain George H. Cain, 84 years old, Civil War veteran and former sheriff of Henry County, died this morning at 1:30 o'clock at his home on East Broad street. He was born in Salem, N.J., and at the age of 14 moved with his parents to Indiana. He had lived on Broad street for the past 35 years.

In 1861 he enlisted in Comapny B, Eighth Indiana infantry, and served three months. In August, 1862, he reenlisted in the 84th Indiana infantry and served for the duration of the Civil War.

He was a member of the GAR, Odd Fellow, red men and K of P lodges.

He is survived by the widow; a sister, Eva Barrd; five children, Archie, Jesse, Frank and George Jr. Cain and Mrs. George Rogers.

BIOGRAPHICAL:

George H. Cain, the son of George Cain, was born in Salem Co., NJ on Sept. 16, 1841. He resided in Salem Co., NJ, until he was 14 years of age, when he came, with his parents, to Jackson Co., IN in 1855. In 1857, George went to Iowa, but returned to Jackson Co. in 1858. He came to New Castle, Henry Co., IN in 1858, and in December engaged in painting which he did until the war began to breakout.

George enlisted in Company B, 8th Ind. Infantry, in April 1861, and served three months. In Nov. 1861, after he returned home he married Sarah, the daughter of George Fraizer, who died in 1874 leaving George and five children. August of 1862, he re-enlisted in Captain Vanneman's company, 84th Ind. Infantry, and served during the war. He enlisted as a Corporal, was promoted to Orderly Sergeant, soon after became a First Lieutenant, and afterwards breveted Captain of his company. George belonged to the 4th Army Corps in the Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General Thomas and Sherman. He participated in the battles of Franklin, Chickamauga, every battle of the Atlanta campaign, and in June 1865 was mustered out. Upon his return to Sulphur Springs, Henry Co., IN, he moved his family to New Castle, in the spring of 1870, and began working at his painting trade again.

George was elected Marshal of New Castle, in 1875, and held that position, until 1882, when he returned to painting. He was elected to the office of Sheriff, of Henry Co., IN, in the fall of 1882.

He was married a 2nd time, in Jan. of 1876, to Emma Chenoweth, a native of Henry Co., IN. They had two children born to them.
