NEWMARKET - Lincoln E. Gowen, 86, of Wadleigh Falls Road, died, Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Sunrise Nursing Home, Exeter, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 16, 1913 in Hardwick, Vt., he was the son of Roy H. and Maud (Estell) Gowen.

He was raised in Concord and graduated from Concord High School, Class of 1931. He moved to Newmarket in 1944.

Mr. Gowen attended the University of New Hampshire, where he joined the ROTC, played football and lacrosse, and was also a boxer.

He was employed at Durgin's Poultry Farm in Lee for several years and was also a laborer in the local construction industry.

Prior to his retirement in 1978, he was employed at Simplex Wire and Cable Co.

He was a member of the Nottingham Grange, the Laborer's Union in Portsmouth, and the Newmarket Community Church.

Mr. Gowen enjoyed gardening and operated a vegetable stand at his home.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rose E. (Hanscom) Gowen, who died in 1971; a sister, Leah Gowen; two brothers, Guy Gowen and Wayne Gowen; a grandson, David Gowen, and a great-grandchild, Adam W. Langley.

Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Gowen and Larry S. Gowen, both of Newmarket, and Kenneth W. Gowen of Barrington; two daughters, Betty Ann Westgate of Barrington and Linda Westgate of Madbury; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Max Gowen of Bedford; a sister, Winola Stokes of Canterbury; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held this afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. and this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 41 Exeter St., Newmarket.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Wuori officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Flowers are acceptable or, should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Newmarket Fire Department or the Newmarket Ambulance Corps.
