The process came to be commonly known as "Femtochemistry". His father worked for the Egyptian Government, Ahmed displayed a strong interest in learning Mathematics, Mechanics and Chemistry at an early age and enrolled at the University of Alexandria, prior to attaining his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. In 2009, President Obama appointed Zewail to serve on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
