Medical Pioneer. Developer of the oral, live virus polio vaccine. Approximately 100 million European children were the first to receive Dr. Sabin's oral polio vaccine in 1960 following worldwide preliminary trials. Between 1962-64 about 100 million US residents received the oral vaccine. Worldwide use of the vaccine is estimated to have prevented about 5 million cases of paralytic polio and 500,000 deaths from 1965-66. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a member of the Epidemiological Board from February 1943 to September 1945 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Presented the National Medal of Science in 1970 by President Richard M. Nixon.
