DSC Citation Synopsis

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Wilton Curry, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 March 1944, at Bougainville, Solomon Islands. Lieutenant Curry single-handedly held a vitally important pillbox against violent attacks for six hours, killing 50 Japanese while telephoning out information and ordering artillery fire directly on his position. First Lieutenant Curry's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
