He left for the war in May of 1861 and was stationed at Jamestown Island manning a fort near the old church tower. In 1862, he enlisted in Co. B., 10th Virginia Battalion, Heavy Artillery with several of his brothers and a cousin. He later transferred to Co. C, 58th Va.
