Enlisted in the Virginia Bedford Light Artillery Battery on 18 May 1861.Promoted to Full 3rd Sergeant.Mustered out on 15 May 1862.Enlisted in Company B, Virginia 10th Heavy Artillery Battalion on 15 May 1862. Mustered out on 17 Jul 1862.Transferred to Company C, Virginia 58th Infantry Regiment on 17 Jul 1862.

He left for the war in May of 1861 and was stationed at Jamestown Island manning a fort near the old church tower. In 1862, he enlisted in Co. B., 10th Virginia Battalion, Heavy Artillery with several of his brothers and a cousin. He later transferred to Co. C, 58th Va. Infantry Regiment and was wounded one week to the day later at the Battle of Cedar Run (Cedar Mountain). ( Hardesty's Historical & Geographical Encyclopedia, Pg. 398)
