Funeral Services for Eric Miller, age 84 of Georgetown, will be held 11:30AM, Wednesday May 11, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg under the direction of The Gabriels Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Davenport officiating.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8PM, Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel.
Eric Ervin Miller left to meet his savior, Jesus Christ, Friday afternoon, May 6, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family.
Eric was born on April 4, 1932 in Copperas Cove, Texas to Erich and Selma Miller. He grew up in the farming area outside Bartlett, Texas where he graduated from Bartlett High School in 1950.
After high school, Eric received an athletic scholarship to play football and baseball at Texas A&M University. Upon graduation, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Eric was commissioned into the United States Air Force and served his country proudly for 21 years as a pilot. Prior to his assignment to flight school and during his student teaching at Rosebud, Texas, he met his loving wife Shirley Lierman, whom he was married to for 60 years.
While Eric served in the United States Air Force, he flew the T-28 Trojan, B-25 Mitchell, T-38 Talon (his favorite), A1-E Skyraider, O-1E Bird Dog, T-33 Shooting Star, and the T-39 Sabreliner. During his flying assignment in the Vietnam, Eric was decorated with 3 medals for aerial combat achievement during Operation Junction City. Specifically, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and a 10th Oak Leaf Cluster to his previously awarded Bronze Star.
After retiring from the Air Force, Eric began his teaching career in the Leander School District where he taught seventh and eighth grade science as well as coached seventh and eighth grade football. He took much joy and pleasure in teaching, molding, and interacting with the youth at Leander. He ended his teaching and coaching after 20 years of service.
Eric loved his church and loved the people of Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg, Texas. He served the church as an Elder and participated in numerous church activities and events; his most favorite being sausage making for the church's annual wurstfest.
Eric enjoyed spending time with Shirley, his boys, and grandkids, overseeing his farm outside Schwertner, Texas, going and supporting the local high school sports, watching his Fighting Texas Aggies, and enjoying a nice big bowl of pralines and cream ice cream.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Wilbert Miller; sisters Lorene and husband Jerome Hierholzer and Lavern Miller and brother in law Ed Hayden.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Miller; their sons Mark and wife Donna, Brad and wife Lynn; granddaughters Megan, Rachel and Bailey; grandsons Eric and Rich; sisters Dora Hayden, Esterleen and husband Clarence Fischer, Velma and husband Albert Holck, Helen and husband Jack Stephenson, Joyce Miller and husband Claus Adam; brother Larry and wife Dodie Miller; and Sister in law Marilyn Miller along with multiple nieces and nephews.
