Joyce Clouse Newcomb

Feb. 25, 1932 — Feb. 2, 2011
Joyce Clouse Newcomb, 78, of Longview passed away peacefully in her sleep Feb. 2, 2011.
Joyce was born Feb. 25, 1932, in Waterside, Pa, the eldest daughter of Maurice Furry Clouse and Hannah Ruth Baker. Joyce graduated from Replogle High School in New Enterprise, Pa., in 1949 and attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where she graduated with a degree in business economics in 1953. After receiving her degree, Joyce worked for Procter & Gamble, traveling the U.S. doing market research. While working for Procter & Gamble, Joyce met Wesley E. Newcomb. The two married and settled in his hometown of Portland. Following their move to Portland, Joyce and Wesley had three children. When the children got older Joyce pursued a career in education, first as a teacher and later as a high school librarian. She received her master’s degree in education from Portland State University. Joyce taught in Portland, Woodland and later in Seattle, where she worked at an alternative high school. She retired in 1994.
Joyce was an avid traveler, having visited numerous destinations in Central and North America, Western and Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. Joyce loved to read, discuss politics, play bridge and other card games and entertain family and friends. Throughout her life Joyce championed the underdog and was always extremely loyal to her family. She truly celebrated the moment. Joyce’s determined spirit and optimism in the face of adversity have inspired many, and these qualities are inherent in her children who are proud to claim them as gifts from their mother Joyce.
She is survived by her long-time companion, William R. Moulton of Longview; three children, Darwin M. Newcomb of Portland, Douglas W. Newcomb of Washington D.C., and Melissa J. Isbell of Seattle; a son-in-law, Dr. John Paul Isbell of Seattle; four step-grandchildren, Mathew Fraley Isbell, Ian C. Isbell, Danielle R. Isbell and Whitney J. Isbell; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol Dawn and Robert Detwiler of New Enterprise; a niece and two nephews, Dawn Housel, Brian Detwiler and Todd Detwiler, all in Pennsylvania; and her adopted nephew, Iain Richardson of Glasgow, Scotland.
Joyce will be dearly missed and is deeply loved by her many friends and family.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 26 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2218 East Kessler Blvd., in Longview. Refreshments will be served.
In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the Hospice Care Center Fund, care of the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.
