George Benz was born in Osthofen, Germany, 23 April 1838. He came to America in 1854 and to St. Paul in 1856. He married Rosa Voehringer 23 April 1861. They had ten children: George G. Benz (b. circa 1862)(who married Josephine Hamm, daughter of Theodore Hamm), Charlotte O. Benz (b. Aug 1864), Herman L. Benz (b. June 1866), Pauline (b. circa 1869), William (b.circa 1871), Paul E. Benz (b. Feb 1874), Lydia M. Benz (b. Apr 1876), Walter G. Benz (b. Nov 1878), Louis (b. Jan 1880), and Laura Benz (b. March 1886)(Ahern).
