He was reared and educated in Torrey where he resided most of his life before coming to St. George area. He served in the U.S. Army 29th Infantry during World War II. He received the Purple Heart with three clusters, Silver Star, Bronze Star, the French Legion of Merit and Distinguised Service Cross. He served in Darby's Rangers before the Normandy Invasion and was involved in all the major European engagements.
He was employed as a rancher and miner and loved to trap. He also worked for the Park Service for 10 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Allen Cale Cannon of El Toro, Calif., Jerry C. Cannon of Las Vegas, Nev., Mrs. Allen (Dixie) Lister of Washington, Mrs. Marilyn Sue Christensen of West Valley; 15 Grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother, Nellie Cannon of St. George; two brothers; David Cannon of Booval, Australia, and Ira Von Cannon of St. George.
Graveside service will be Wednesday, May 10 1989 at 11 a.m. at the Torrey Cemetery. Friends may call at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 10, 1989. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Torrey Veterans Post.
