Warren was born in 1921, near Enumclaw, Washington to Earl and Ida Marshall. He graduated from Enumclaw High School in 1939 and received his B.S. in Agronomy from Washington State College in 1943.

He married his college sweetheart, Thelma (Jacobsen) Marshall in October 1943.

He was commissioned in the Army as an infantry officer during WW2 in Europe. Following the war, he returned to WSC where he received a masters degree in Soil Science in 1948. He worked with the Green Giant Company in Dayton Washington as a field research agronomist and soil scientist until 1952. In 1956, the family moved to Yakima and he was employed by Shell Chemical as a sales agronomist. In 1965, he helped found Agrimanagement, Inc., a private crop consulting company that is independent of product sales.
