Civil War Confederate Army Officer from Madison Parish, Louisiana. He suffered a debilitating wound to his right arm, rendering him unable to return to the battle field. A native of Switzerland, he was a Captain (also designated MAJOR) in the Confederate Army , commander of Camp Sumter and the notorious Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia. Blamed for being responsible for the terrible conditions there, although he pleaded for additional resources, he was subsequently hanged for war crimes. Prior to his military service he was a medical doctor, practicing as a Homeopathic Physician in Madison Parish, Louisiana, having moved there from Trigg County, Kentucky, where he also practiced medicine. He married widow Elizabeth Savells Wolfe in Trigg County, Kentucky, where she returned after the federal government hanged her husband.
