Retired Col. Willard B. Atwell, Jr., USAF of Perdido Bay County Club Estates, recently passed away peacefully at his home following an extended illness.

He was born August 15, 1915, in Wakefield, MA, one of six children of Willard B. and Harriet Atwell.

He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, in 1939, and was a member of the "Class of Heroes" who fought the big wars and forged the modern military.

Col. Atwell had a distinguished military career of over thirty years. He was one of the plank holders when the Air Force was established in 1947 and was qualified to fly the many different aircraft. Following military retirement, he worked for Martin Merietta in the missile program subsequently with Connecticut General life Insurance Co. as an onsite estate planner for United Air Lines.

He and his wife, Ruby, moved to Pensacola in 1974.

He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Roger.

Col. Atwell will be buried with military honors at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY.
