At a young age, Charles moved from Scott Co., VA to Morgan Co., KY. This area is now Menifee Co., KY. He settled near Pomeroyton, on a farm on Blackwater. This was in the mid 1840's, several of his brothers and one of his uncles, John Culbertson also lived in this area, during this period. The descendants of John Culbertson lived in Menifee Co., KY until the 1900 census, then moved away.

He was buried in the woods on his farm, later known as the Murphy Farm. In 1993 Kenny Culbertson located the grave in a wooded section of the farm. It was marked with native stones. In 1997 with the help of his wife, Bonnie and some other relatives, they placed a chain link fence around the grave. In 2009 a tombstone was place on his grave.
