Alfred Sylvester Bates, 88, of Newaygo, passed away on June 6, 2016 at Transitional Health Services in Fremont, Michigan. He was born on August 17, 1927 to Forest and Geneva (Backus) Bates in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He worked for Doehler-Jarvis for over 20 years until his retirement. On December 20, 1947 he married Orpha Mae Peterson in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the White Cloud Church God. He was also a Bishop at Full Gospel Mission Church in Grand Rapids. Alfred is survived by his wife of 68 years Orpha Mae, his sons: James (Carlene) Bates of White Cloud, Michigan, Dennis (Linda) Bates of Muskegon, Michigan; his daughter Vicki (Manuel) Cavasos of Newaygo, Michigan; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.
