Full-blood Azorean Islands descendant: He was one of six children born to William "Willie" Caton (also known as "Gerurlherme Caetano" in local records of Portuguese translation in Provincetown) and Mary daLuiz Cabral Caton in Provincetown, Barnstable County, Mass.

When his mother died around 1918, he and his brother Charlie lived with their aunt Emma Silva Flint and her husband. Married first to Celina in 1931, and had a son and a daughter. Married second to Nancy in 1953. Jimmie was a surfman with the US Coast Guard, out of the Highland Station in Truro, Barnstable County, Mass. After his death Nancy moved to Sacramento, California.

James' mother immigrated from Santa Maria Isle, Azores, Portugal between 1902-1906. His father was born in Provincetown as was James and a child of Azorean immigrants.
