Optometrist Dr. Green dies at 102
Published July 10, 1976
Dr. John Leonard Green, 102, of 121 West Grove St., El Dorado died Saturday in a nursing home here.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Don B. Harbuck and Rev. Glen Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Young's.
Dr. Green was born August 9, 1873, in Dubach, La. the son of Richard Malachi Baxter and Mary Jane Gathright Green. Dr. Green was an El Dorado Optometrist for 65 yrs. Prior to coming to El Dorado he had practiced optometry in Junction City for 10 yrs. And in Ruston, La. for two yrs. He was a graduate of Dr. Littlefield's College of Optometry in Topeka, Kan. He was secretary-treasurer of the Board of Optometry Examiners for 13 yrs. Active in Civic affairs Dr. Green had been on the El Dorado School Board and the city council.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of El Dorado for 71 years. Dr. Green was a member of El Dorado Masonic Lodge No. 13, F&AM; a 71 year 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Arkansas Consistery-Valley of Little Rock, Orient of Arkansas, (formerly Albert Pike Consistery). He was a 61-year Shriner and a member of the Little Rock Scimitar Temple. He was a past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Royal Arch Chapter.
Survivors include one brother, Mr. C. L. Green of Booneville; one sister, Mrs. T. R. Roberson of Dubach, La.; one grandson, Mangham Green of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Axum of St. Louis, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Constance Estelle Green and George Leonard Green of Houston, Tex. and Madeline Elizabeth Axum and Harrison Bartley Axum of St. Louis; and one step-daughter, Mrs. Sue Vivian Ripley of El Dorado.
Pallbearers will be Raymond B. Higgins, Lennie Graves, Bill Kimes, Claude Avaritt, Harold Wood, Morris Pockrus, Madison Pendelton and Wilson Irby.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Southern Baptist Churches of El Dorado area, the Ragsdale Theatre Bible Class and the Chapel Bible Class.
The family will be at the Mangham Green Residence at 619 N. Jackson St.
There will be a Masonic Graveside Service by El Dorado Masonic Lodge No. 13, F&AM.
