Catherine Bunn, was born in 1829, New York. She married Tobias Reese, son of Tobias Rees and Polly (last name unknown) in 1850, Crawford County, Pennsylvania by Elder Gerage. Tobias Reese, was born in 1823, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. They were the parents of nine children. Tobias and Catherine owned a small ten acre farm located in Wayne township, Crawford County that was just adjacent to the Venango County border.

On November 12, 1862, Tobias enlisted for three years’ service at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served in Captain John I. Nevin’s Independent Battery, (H), Pennsylvania Light Artillery Volunteers, who were organized in September of that year. Immediately after their organization, the battery was ordered to Hagerstown, Maryland, the Union army at this time were camped on the left bank of the Potomac, having just previously fought and driven the enemy at Antietam. The regiment was assigned to General Morell’s command, and served with him until December. They were then ordered to Camp Barry, in the District of Columbia, artillery headquarters, where they went into camp for the winter. In February 1863, Captain Nevin resigned and William Borrowe, of the Second United States Artillery, was commissioned Captain. Early in the spring, the battery was ordered to report to General J. P. Slough, in command at Alexandria, and for a period of nearly two years, it was actively employed in provost duty rendering efficient service against the commands of Confederate General Jeb Stuart and Colonel John Mosby. Tobias service lasted for a little over two years. He became ill, suffering from Phthsis Pulmonullis (tuberculosis) his symptoms included a sever cough, accelerated pulse, progressive night sweats and progressive emaciation with loss of appetite. He was not fit for duty for six months prior to his discharge but unable for duty two months prior. He was discharged on January 1, 1865 and returned home but never recovered. He died January 20, 1869. He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

After his death, Catherine sold the farm and moved to Venango County, she was living in Summit City in 1870. Nothing is known of her death. She was living in Clinton township in Venango County in 1880, there are civil war pension affidavits for Catherine dated February 1882. I have not been able to find her after this date.

Obituary:
May 23, 1913 p1c2
Collingwood, Matilda Mrs, 62, died Fri. Services at home Sun in Maple Shade. Sons: William, Frank, George, Louis, Frederick, Henry & Robert, with whom she made her home.
Note for James Findley Collingwood:
His death certificate lists his mother as Mary Vogus, however, Dora Messner, gives the following information for the mother of Findley: Mary Vogus is his step-mom. According to the records of other researchers, Hannah Bathhurst is his mother. Hannah disappeared after the birth of J F and no one has to my knowledge found her. Charles Collingwood went on to marry Mary Vogus and had many children with her. There is not evidence that J F interacted much, if at all, with his half-siblings after his marriage.

4. Tobias Reese, Jr., was born May 25, 1854, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Tobias died October 30, 1881, Kingsley Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Tionesta, Forest County, Pennsylvania.

Notes for Tobias Reese, Jr.: The Forest Republication, (Tionesta, Pennsylvania)-Wed. Nov. 9, 1881 Kingsley Township furnishes another case of mysterious disappearance. Last Sunday evening a week ago Tobias Reese, who has been in the employ of the Salmon Creek Lumber Co. for some weeks, crossed the Tionesta creek, in company with another employee, to get some apples. The breast of a dam has been used for crossing on all summer, it having been nearly dry owing to the low water; on the evening in question a slash broke on one of the dams above which allowed the water to raise sufficiently to cover the foot passage with twelve to sixteen inches of water. The two men started back when they were overtaken by a man with a rig and Reese’s companion got in the buggy and rode across, he (Reese) saying he would walk. This is the last that has been seen or heard of him, and it is supposed that he, having undertaken to cross on the dam and not knowing that the water had risen, was washed off and drowned. The creek has since been dragged for a considerable distance, and a thorough search made, but all in vain. The missing man was unmarried and his parents live at Summit City, Venango Co. He had not drawn all of his wages from the company, and all his extra clothes are still in their hands.

THE BODY FOUND On Monday the brother-in-law of the unfortunate man arrived and after a thorough search succeeded in finding the body and bring it to the surface; It was lodged in some logs and drift about ten feet below the dam. The remains were brought to Tionesta on Tuesday, and on this (Wednesday) afternoon buried in our cemetery. The man was aged about 26 years.

9. Mesanas Henry Reese, was born December 06, 1865, Sugar Lake, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. His sister, Matilda’s obituary mentions her brother, Henry and states he was living in Warren County, Pennsylvania. I did find a Henry Reese who married a Rose Reynolds living in Warren County. I have not been able to prove this is our Henry. There are several genealogies on the internet for a Henry Lucien Reese and Rose Reynolds. I have included a death certificate I found for a Henry Reese who died in Warren County. I wasn’t able to prove this was our Henry because the parents are not listed. Also, no wife was listed, and it appears Rose divorced her husband.
