Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. An 1849 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served during the Civil War as Colonel of the 42nd New York Volunteer Infantry, as Colonel of the 2nd New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery, and a Major of the 8th United States Regular Infantry. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Virginia", and Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He retired from the Regular Army in 1871 with the rank of Major.
