She was born April 15, 1939 in Rensselaer, Indiana to the late Hiram and Loretta (Shumaker) Alberts. Janet attended Rensselaer High School.
Her marriage was to John H. Lanning on March 21, 1957 in Crown Point, Indiana. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2015.
Janet enjoyed spending her time playing the card game Bunco, watching racing and the Chicago Cubs on television. Most of all, Janet loved spending time with her family.
Janet is survived by her three children, Roger (Zenda) Lanning, Joe Lanning and John (Edwina) Guffey-Lanning; sisters, Betty Gadson and June Osborne; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Lois Lowry, Delos Doc Alberts, Bud Alberts, Harold "Dean" Alberts and Peggy Sue Alberts.
