|Birth: ||May 21, 1987|
|Death: ||Oct. 24, 2006|
Pfc. Bryant C. Compean of El Campo, Texas died during weapons practice at a firing range at Arizona's Yuma Proving Ground. He joined the Army in February 2005 and was stationed at Fort Lewis in May 2006. He had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon. On Wednesday, the Army posthumously promoted him from private to private first class. He graduated from El Campo High School in 2005 and the following January he enlisted. He had looked at different options and had even taken some college entry exams but decided on the military. While he had some friends that were going into the Marines, he decided on the Army. He was a good-natured person who wanted to have some fun in life and wasn't that serious about much before joining the Army. But he loved being in the infantry and the kind of person he was becoming. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Iris Smith; sister, Amber Smith; brother, Mason Smith; paternal grandparents, Carl and Marjorie Steubing; and Maternal grandfather Reynaldo Pita. Compean's military specialty was an infantryman but he was also looking at other options. He was talking about getting into the military police and making the Army a career or getting the experience and becoming a police officer in civilian life. The military did a lot to give him some direction in his life. He was proud of what he was doing and wrote or called us almost every day to talk about what he was doing. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. He was 19.
