Charles H Fort was the son of William Fort (1801-1875) and Ann Allen Fort (1805-1854). Charles was born in July of 1841 and died December 23, 1900. On April 8, 1864 he married Ellen M. Hughes, who was born in England. They had one daughter named Lillie who passed away at age eighteen.
During the Civil War he enlisted in Company C of the New Jersey 12 Infantry Regiment September 4th 1862. He remained in service until June 29, 1865. The unit fought at the Battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg at Bliss’s Barn, Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Appomattox Court House where Lee and his army surrendered.
