On April 16, Dr. Markus Stephanus Kryger, a devoted physician for 30 years, died peacefully in his home. He was 67.

Dr. Kryger was born in Bloemendaal, Netherlands on July 30, 1948. After graduating Shattuck St. Mary's School in Minnesota he became a State Highway Patrolman in South Dakota. Not finding this exciting enough, he spent seven years fighting crime and catching bad guys as an agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency. This left him feeling unfulfilled so he made the decision to help others in a different way by becoming a doctor.

He attended Black Hills State University in South Dakota and then Tulane University Medical School on New Orleans, LA. It was during his time at Tulane that he met the true love of his life, Rhea Randall whom he married in 1982.

Dr. Kryger graduated from Tulane in 1983. In 1986 after a 3 year residency in Clarksburg, WV, he and Rhea made their home in Forsyth, MO and Dr. Kryger began his life's work as the town doctor.

Medicine was a spiritual practice for Dr. Kryger. His herculean strength of character, dedication to his patients and deep faith guided him throughout his career. To Dr. Kryger healing meant not only prescribing medicine but also being present with each patient , lending an ear and helping to carry the burdens of the community. He often received tokens of gratitude from patients which he humbly accepted but felt he did not deserve. He loved his patients as family and though he gave himself completely to his practice, to Dr. Kryger it never felt like enough.

Dr. Kryger's dedication to his practice was driven by love and not constrained by business hours. A call was never too early or too late and he would not hesitate to rush to the country in the middle of the night to stitch up a crying child. Dr. Kryger and his beloved dog Sherlock were often found at the Forsyth Care Center on Sundays. After visiting with patients, Dr. Kryger would fill the center with music, playing hymns at the piano and smiling at passersby.

Dr. Kryger's stalwart devotion to his patients was rivaled only by his love for his family and his God. He loved his "Queen" Rhea, children and grandchildren fiercely and there was nothing he wouldn't do to protect and cherish them. His siblings and dearest friends brought him comfort, joy and laughter. Dr. Kryger never missed an opportunity to show his gratitude to God for his family and loved ones.

Every choice he made was with others in mind. He understood that life is short and he lived to maximize the good he could do for others. This was the only way for him to live his life, because, as he would say, "We're all just passing through."

He is preceded in death by brother Mike Krijger, brother Bart Kryger, sisters Renee Landesman and Annelise Overton, his father Pieter Krijger and mother Anna Yntema Krijger.

A celebration of life will be held at Empire Park in Forsyth, MO on July 30th in the afternoon. An announcement will be made once details are set. The community will be invited to share in remembering this amazing man.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to two of Dr. Kryger's favorite organizations....Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of Atlanta, Ga (http//pausa.com) and Salvation Army Branson (http//www.salvationarmyusa.org)
