Ross Alexander Collins

Congressman. He graduated from the University of Kentucky and the law department of the University of Mississippi. Collins practiced law in Meridian and served as Mississippi Attorney General from 1912 to 1920. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 1919. In 1920 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served from 1921 to 1935. He was an unsuccessful US Senate candidate in 1934, and was returned to the US House in 1936, serving from 1937 to 1943. He was an unsuccessful US Senate candidate in a 1941 special election, and again in 1942. He then resumed the practice of law in Meridian. Collins was recognized as an expert on military affairs and was credited with advocating expansion of US air power in advance of World War II. (bio by: Bill McKern)
