Pvt Mask enlisted into the US Army on November 15, 1872 at Pittsburgh PA. He was described as 5-4, brown hair, gray eyes with a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was moulder.

On December 9, 1872, he was assigned to Company B, 7th US Cavalry at Spartanburg NC. His daily duties were listed as cook & mail carrier.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company B was assigned to Maj Reno's battalion. At the time of the battle, Company B had the largest number new men.

Mask was killed during the battle. There were several reports that he had been killed while getting water from the Little Bighorn River...& his body was washed away.
