Birth: 1849
Stuttgart
Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Death: Jun. 25, 1876
Little Big Horn Battle Site
Big Horn County
Montana, USA

On July 11, 1870, Engel enlisted into the US Army in Cleveland OH. Military records spell his name as either Gustav Engel or Gustave Engel. His listed civilian occupation was "cooper." He was described as 5'7", brown hair & eyes with a fair complexion.

On September 20, 1870, Engle reported for duty at Ft Richardson, TX & was assigned to Company C 7th US Cavalry. Company C was commanded by two time Medal of Honor recipient Capt Tom Custer. Capt Custer was also LTC George A Custer's brother. In 1875, Engel reenlisted & remained with Company C. His daily duties were cook.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company C was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Engel was killed sometime during the fighting.

After the battle many soliders from C Company were found on what had been the flanks of Company L near Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

Burial details did not report finding Engle's body. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where then had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
