MRS. ALTA GWINN SAUNDERS Services for Mrs. Alta Gwinn Saunders. 61, of Urbana, chairman of the department of business English at the University of Illinois since 1938, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Smith Memorial Music hall on the university campus in Urbana.

Mrs. Saunders, sister-in-law of Robert Johnston, night editor of THE TRIBUNE, died Thursday in the crash of a United Air Lines plane in Pennsylvania, she had been with the university since 1917 and was the author of several several books on business English.

Included in the list of 43 dead when a United airlines plane crashed crashed near Mount Carmel, Pa., was Mrs. Alta Gwinn Saunders, 61. Uni- University of Illinois business English professor.

Mrs. Saunders had been a member of the school faculty since 1910, except for three years in business. She was one of the first to teach business English as a separate course when she began the work in 1919. She was chairman of the department at her death.

A daughter of O. M. and Sarah Wells Gwinn she was horn Nov 19, 1886. in Oakland, Ill. The family moved to Urbana in 1903. She was graduated from the university in 1907. She received a masters degree in 1910.

An authority on market analysis and correspondence for mail advertising, Mrs. Saunders wrote several books, including. "Effective Business English." "Your Application Application Letter" and "The Literature of Business."

Mrs. Saunders drove to Evanston Wednesday to visit a sister. She was flying to New York to consult with her publishers when the plane crashed. She also was to have attended attended a Delta Gamma sorority convention in Swampscott, Mass. Editor of the sorority publication, publication, "Anchora," Mrs. Saunders also was a member of the American Association of College Professors, the Direct Mail Advertising Association, the American Business Writers Association and other honorary honorary groups.
