Swedish illustrator. He was also called P. E. Hedman, as he normally signed his art, or Pelle Hedman, as the common Swedish nickname (for Per or Peter) has him. He illustrated a large amount of newspapers and books in Scandinavia with his realistic drawings of news situations and thousands of portraits of people, considered exceptionally accurate. He was born in the village of Gimsbärke, Amsberg (northwestern Borlänge), Sweden and started drawing relatives and various folklore in that farming community at an early age. In 1878 he was enrolled in the Technical Highschool in the capital of Stockholm. He and world famous Anders Zorn met there. In 1887 he was in Paris, France, and continued there associating and fraternizing with the art elite of his day. In later years, besides continuing to do remarkable work in ink, water colors, oil and chalk, he also worked with conservation and restoration of valuable artwork for museums. Many of his historical paintings have been especially appreciated. He often did full-page covers for the front pages of newspapers. His drawings often reveal an astute sense of humor, especially in dealing with royalty and the relationship of 'commoners' to same. He built a famous viking-style villa "The Dragon House" in Gimsbärke on the spot where his ancestral farm home had burned down in 1893. He married Augusta Engström and had a son and a daughter (neither of whom had children themselves). The local homeland society Tunabygdens hembygdsförening raised the gravestone on his grave at Amsberg. The authoritative biography of him is by Hugo Hedström (1964).
